Specialty Classes

In addition to our two core education curriculums we offer workshops in additional cake decorating techniques such as sugar flowers, figurine modelling, cupcakes and themed cakes such as our Christmas cake workshops. These workshops are designed for you to dip in and out of or just to do for fun however all of these workshops are taught at the same standard and with the same professionalism as our core curriculum and act as complimentary workshops to our two core education steams

XMAS Snowman

Instead of making a traditional fruit cake this Christmas why not make this delicious snowman figurine cake made from chocolate cake. You will have a fun introduction into cake decorating and this course would replace Basics 101 should you wish to progress further with more workshops next year. In this workshop you will learn how to set up, cover and decorate a round cake, the round cake is the first shape we teach in the Basics series and is a perfect place to start for beginners. The “Snowman” cake not only teaches you the fundamentals of setting up and covering, but you will learn how to achieve Planet Cake’s famous razor sharp edges, cover seams, ice your board and employ four different cake decorating techniques. Planet Cake’s goal is to teach students skills that they can replicate at home with the same results. All classes are taught by teachers with Trade qualifications and a minimum of 10 years cake decorating experience, all classes will also be assisted by a teaching assistant. Take some time out and learn something new before Christmas, treat yourself!

Santa in the chimney

Instead of making a traditional fruit cake this Christmas why not make this delicious novelty cake made from chocolate cake. This cake is sure to make all your guests laugh and never fails to delight children. You will have a fun introduction into cake decorating and this course would replace Novelty 101 should you wish to progress further with more workshops next year. In this course we will initially cover cake basics on everything from how to prepare the perfect base before you decorate to how to handle rolled fondant icing and the different equipment we use. The course will then progress quickly and students will attempt their own cake as well as gain knowledge and experience in preparing a range of novelty decorating techniques including air-brushing, painting, glazing & making Santa’s legs using figurine skills. More advanced students will be taught helpful techniques and tips to improve their current skill base. This is a ‘hands on’ course therefore class sizes will be kept relatively small, all materials and a lovely lunch is also provided. Take some time out and learn something new before Christmas, treat yourself!

XMAS Present Box

This workshop is the Basics 102 workshop in Christmas theme the second workshop in our Basics Series program; in this workshop you will learn how to set up, cover and decorate the more challenging square shaped cake. XMAS Beginner Cupcakes

Turn yourself into a domestic god or goddess. Join in the fun and spend three hours with the amazing Planet Cake team and get creative with cupcakes. This workshop is a great way to be introduced to cake decorating and impress your friends at the same time. This course is designed for beginners and it will cover a range of 6 different pretty designs using fondant icing. This is a great introduction to cake decorating and will teach to you how to prepare the cupcake so they look perfect and you will be making friends with other budding foodies and decorators at the same time (maximum 12 students). If you love TV shows like Ace of Cakes, Cake Boss and Planet Cake you will love this workshop, bring a friend and double the fun. At the end you will be able to trot home with a box of your own delicious designer cupcakes!

Team Building Exercises

The Cupcake Challenge event is amazing fun for parties, team building and charity fundraising. This fast paced and exciting cake event is incredibly effective because of its simplicity, essentially it gets your guests to compete Masterchef style to see who can decorate the best and most amount of cupcakes in 2 hours. This event requires a minimum of 10 people, 5 people in each team. It’s an activity that’s perfect for all skill levels, the teams that succeed are those that can organize a production line and prioritize their time and resources to decorate the most amount of cupcakes, at least 15-20 per person. We have seen first hand the flexibility of this activity, you can introduce company logo colors, support a local charity, introduce values and messages or tailor the event and cupcake designs anyway you wish. However no matter who wins, everyone enjoys eating the results the wonderful feeling that comes from donating the cupcakes to a local charity should you wish! This experience is available for group sizes between 10 to 100 people on request.

Stiletto

Fashionista cakes are always popular and learning how to make this beautiful stiletto figurine will be an invaluable addition to your cake repertoire. This class uses a mould and you can adjust the decoration to any brand you wish, do your research before hand and bring a photo into class.

Private Lessons

Private Lessons are an individual training option for people who prefer to work ‘one on one’. They can be taken as an adjunct to our normal group lessons, or as a standalone training program. Privates can be a great tool for brushing up on weak areas or to delve into areas of personal interest. In order to book your private lesson you will need to book each day separately, each day is regarded as a 7 hour class, if you are uncertain of how many days will be required for your lesson by arrangement with our school.

Private Lesson cakes can be anything of interest to the student however topics must be submitted to Planet Cake upon booking the lesson, to be approved by your teacher and school to assist with class preparation. Lessons can progress at the student’s own pace, and can span any range of topics. We look forward to seeing you at Planet Cake!

Petit Stencil and Lustre

This is a techniques class to teach you the art of stencilling, sugar flower making and lustre, arguably the three most popular and essential techniques for cake decorators today. Working on a petit square springtime dummy cake, students will be introduced to the technical skills required to execute these techniques professionally.

Planet Cake’s goal is to teach students skills and designs that they can replicate at home with the same results. All classes are taught by qualified teachers.

Noah’s Ark – Novelty Specialty

In this workshop you will be sculpting and decorating a Noah’s Ark cake as well as making at least 4 animal figurines; this means you will be learning two skills for the price of one!. You will learn the techniques required to structure, sculpt, smooth and cover a 3D standing cake, with a focus on working with ganache and fondant. You will learn how to create at least 4 different animal figurine designs using traditional figurine modeling techniques. You will learn how to colour icing, cover seams, decorate your board, and employ six different cake decorating techniques including modeling, making and using templates, glazing and creating the boats cabin, decorating with royal icing and painting. On completing this workshop you will be able to create most free standing shaped cake shapes; this is a very important skill for every cake decorator. Bride and Groom Figurines

Learning how to make figurines is essential for the modern cake decorator. Almost 25% of our cakes are decorated with figurines. The figurines that are taught in this workshop are not as difficult as our Funky People which are carved form Styrofoam and take a long time and enormous skill to make; rather these figurines are based on traditional modelling techniques and are completely made from icing, they are still very effective and popular and are much more enjoyable to create. In this workshop you will be taught how to create skin colour, how to proportion the bodies and head, paint faces, make effective hair, attach limbs and create clothing to match a reference. Once you have learnt some essential modelling skills you can then create your own figurines varying in skin colour, age and size what fun!

Big Flower Little Flower

This class is the perfect introduction to making sugar flowers; we will show you how to create great looking sugar flowers without wires, using traditional techniques and flower modelling. Create a range of gorgeous flowers, varying in size from the petite Cherry Blossom to the impressive Dahlia. This class is suitable for all levels of students. After you have finished this class and have found yourself in love with this sugar flowers we suggest sugar flowers intermediate our wired flower class.
