Novelty Intermediate Week

The Novelty Intermediate course is just as the name implies, this week long intensive course (Novelty 105 and 106) is designed to teach you the structural intermediate skills required to create large standing and moving novelty cakes, this is a HUGE advantage for your cake decorating career either professionally or as a hobbyist as the popularity of these types of cakes has increased massively. Novelty 105, the fantasy tree, teaches students to create an extended complex shape, with a focus on internal construction. In this workshop you will learn the techniques required to structure, sculpt, smooth and cover a complex extended 3D shape. On completing this workshop you will be able to create various extended designs in cake; this is a very important skill for every keen cake decorator as 3D cakes like this are extremely popular. You can alter the theme to whatever you choose there are no limits to the design opportunities; create a fairytale fantasy, a rain forest or a scary Halloween tree! Novelty 106, the Mega Monster Truck, is the first cake in our series that actually moves. In this workshop you will be learning to make a structurally complex, realistic hand painted cake that moves along on all wheels! This is the sixth workshop in our Novelty program; our goal is to teach you the techniques required to structure a cake that requires mid-air board and supports, the focus being on cake construction. In this workshop you will learn the techniques required in building, sculpting and smoothing a 3D cake on mid-air board with a focus on working with different scaffolding materials. You will then learn how to cover the shape, cover seams, and create wheels and decorations. You will also employ many different cake decorating techniques including detailing, making and using templates, painting, airbrushing and hand painting the truck. On completing this workshop you will be able to create complex structures for cakes.

Novelty Foundation Week

The Novelty foundation course as the name implies is designed to teach you the basic skills required to begin a novelty cake decorating career either professionally or as a hobbyist. Novelty 101,102 and 103 will be taught during the week as these workshops are designed to give you the skills to set up and cover a 2D Shape, Standing Novelty Cake and a Sphere, these are the essential decorating techniques needed to be able to tackle most novelty designs (e.g: 2D cartoon shapes, soccer balls etc) and the first 3 cake shapes to master in the Novelty series. In addition to these workshops you will be immersed in the Planet Cake kitchen for an entire week, learning along fellow decorators and being able to re-enforce learning outcomes from the previous day, hopefully having a greater chance of retaining the knowledge learned. In addition to the Novelty 101, 102 and 103 learning outcomes you will enjoy a DAY OF BREAK-OUT HANDS-ON TUTORIALS, including airbrushing, painting, and figurine making and working with Rice Krispies (valued at $780).

Novelty Masters – Maharaja Elephant

In this workshop you will be learning to make our incredible maharaja elephant, structurally complex, realistic and beautifully decorated! This is the final workshop in our Advanced Novelty program; our goal is to teach you the techniques required to structure a cake that sits on four legs, the focus being on advanced internal cake construction. In this workshop you will learn the techniques required in building, sculpting and smoothing a complex 3D cake on legs with a focus on working with different scaffolding materials. You will then learn how to cover the shape, cover seams, and ice your board with a grass effect. You will also employ many different cake decorating techniques including eye detailing, making and using templates, painting, using Rice Krispies, airbrushing and making the elephant costume. On completing this workshop you will be able to create complex structures for cakes; this is a very important skill for every cake decorator as some of the most incredible and in demand cakes are complex novelty cakes. Novelty 109 – Magic Wine Bottle

In this workshop you will be learning to make the gravity defying magic wine bottle cake! This is the second workshop in our Advanced Novelty program and we will be teaching students how to sculpt and suspend the cake in midair. In this workshop you will learn the techniques required to structure, sculpt and smooth a 3D cake with a focus on working with ganache and fondant as well as structuring the cake. You will then learn how to cover the shape, cover seams, and ice your board. In learning this complex novelty cake you will learn advanced novelty structure techniques developed and perfected here at Planet Cake. You will also employ many different cake decorating techniques including creating a splash, making and using templates, painting, sculpting and covering Styrofoam, airbrushing and making your own label. On completing this workshop you will be able to create complex structures for cakes; this is a very important skill for every cake decorator as some of the most incredible and in demand cakes are complex novelty cakes. Novelty 107 – Fantasy Dragon

In this workshop you will be learning to make the magnificent fantasy dragon cake! This is the first workshop in our Advanced Novelty program, and we will be teaching students how to sculpt a volcano cake and create the complex dragon figurine. In this workshop you will learn the techniques required to sculpt and smooth a 3D cake, with a focus on working with ganache and fondant. You will then learn how to cover the shape, cover seams and ice your board. In learning this complex novelty cake you will employ many different cake decorating techniques including creating a dragon figurine, making and using templates, painting, sculpting and covering Styrofoam, airbrushing and creating a novelty cake scene. On completing this workshop you will be able to create complex figurines for whatever cake you wish; this is a very important skill for every cake decorator as some of the most incredible and in demand cakes are complex novelty cakes. Novelty 104 – Kimmie Doll

This is the fourth workshop in our updated, 10 module Novelty Series program, and takes students from beginners to an intermediate skill level. This brand-new two day workshop teaches students to create a standing figure entirely out of cake. In this workshop you will learn the techniques required to structure, sculpt, smooth and cover a 3D standing cake which is top-heavy, with a focus on working with ganache and fondant. On completing this workshop you will be able to create various “standing” figure designs in cake; this is a very important skill for every keen cake decorator as 3D figure cakes like this are extremely popular. Planet Cake’s goal is to teach students skills and designs that they can replicate at home with the same results.

Novelty 103 – World Globe

In this workshop you will be decorating a ball shaped cake as the world globe, in this workshop we will be teaching you some of the most important and impressive techniques for a novelty cake maker! This is the third workshop in our Novelty program and you will learn the techniques required to structure, sculpt, smooth and cover a ball shaped cake with a focus on working with ganache and fondant. The globe will be made entirely from cake; you will learn how to structure your cake by making and using a centre pole and internal board to stop your cake from sliding off the board! You will learn how to cover a ball shape, cover seams, ice your board and employ six different cake decorating techniques including air brushing, making and using a world template, glazing, painting, piping and royal icing texturing. On completing this workshop you will be able to create whatever ball shaped cake you wish, this is a very important skill for every cake decorator as the ball shaped cake could be adapted to create a tea pot, sports ball, fruits, vegetables or any cake that is required to be a ball shape. Novelty 102 – Bullet Shape

In this workshop you will be decorating a bullet shaped cake with 2 different cake designs, the penguin and rocket ship; this means you will be learning two different cake designs for the price of one*! This is the second workshop in our Novelty program and you will learn the techniques required to structure, sculpt, smooth and cover a 3D standing cake, with a focus on working with ganache and fondant. You will learn how to create 2 different cake designs using the same cake but different decorating techniques. You will learn how to colour icing, cover seams, ice your board and employ six different cake decorating techniques including modelling, making and using templates, glazing, cutting and covering Styrofoam, creating the cone tip, decorating with stripes and free standing decorations (rocket legs). On completing this workshop you will be able to create whatever free standing bullet shaped cake you wish; this is a very important skill for every cake decorator as the bullet shaped cake could be adapted to create a kettle, rocket, whale, dolphin, fish or any cake that is required to be vertical. Planet Cake’s goal is to teach students skills that they can replicate at home with the same results.

Novelty 101 – 2D Faces

In this workshop you will be learning three different cake designs for the price of one! This is the first workshop in our Novelty program and we will be teaching students how to sculpt a shape and alter the shape to create 3 different faces and expressions. In this workshop you will learn the techniques required to sculpt and smooth a 2D cake with a focus on working with ganache and fondant. You will learn how to create 3 different faces including a monkey, sheep and cow using the same shape but different decorating techniques. You will learn how to cut and cover the shape, cover seams, ice your board and employ six different cake decorating techniques including modeling, making and using templates, simple painting, cutting and covering Styrofoam, creating different facial expressions and using edible glitter. On completing this workshop you will be able to create whatever 2/D face you wish, this is a very important skill for every cake decorator as children’s cakes often consist of animals, including lions, bears etc, this is the perfect workshop to learn these skills. Planet Cake’s goal is to teach students skills that they can replicate at home with the same results. All classes are taught by teachers with Trade qualifications and a minimum of 10 years cake decorating experience, all classes will also be assisted by a teaching assistant.
