Basics 101 (Exploding Lollies) is the first workshop in our Basics Series program; This introductory workshop will attempt to remove a lot of the mystery surrounding cake decorating and introduce beginners to some fundamentals such as setting up a cake with ganache and covering a round cake with rolled fondant icing, creating cut-out decorations and decorations on wires. Students will be guided through the decoration of an exploding stars cake suitable for any occasion and learn how to achieve PC’s famous sharp edges.

The round cake is the first shape we teach in the Basics Series and is a perfect place to start for beginners, on completing a round cake your next step in the basics series will be a Basics 102. Planet Cake’s goal is to teach students skills that they can replicate at home with the same results. All classes are taught by qualified teachers and enough time to give students one on one time for incredible results.

This is the second workshop in our Basics Series program; in this workshop you will learn how to set up, cover and decorate the more challenging square shaped cake. The Tiffany cake not only teaches you the fundamentals of setting up and covering a square, but you will learn how to achieve Planet Cake’s famous razor sharp edges, cover seams, ice your board, three different cake decorating techniques including a lid, puffy bow and using a stencil. Planet Cake’s goal is to teach students skills and designs that they can replicate at home with the same results. All classes are taught by qualified teachers.

This is the third workshop in our Basics Series program and introduces students to the extended tiered cake, through one of Planet Cake’s most popular wedding designs; the flower ruffle cake. The two-tiered cake is an essential skill for all decorators, from hobbyists to professionals, and is the final of the beginner workshops in the series. Additional techniques students can expect to learn include: setting up a tiered cake, mastering sharp edges, covering fondant seams, creating the ‘flower design’ ruffle, wired peony sugar flower and making and covering an extended bottom tier. Planet Cake’s goal is to teach students skills and designs that they can replicate at home with the same results. All classes are taught by qualified teachers.

This is the fourth workshop in our 10 module Basics Series program and takes students from beginners to an intermediate skill level through the three tiered ‘Giant Rose’ wedding cake. This popular two day workshop teaches students to avoid the pitfalls of tiered cakes through the use of center poles in order to create a perfectly straight and supported cake. As an added bonus, Basics 104 also includes silver leaf and icing indentation techniques as well as the beautiful giant sugar rose. Planet Cake’s goal is to teach students skills and designs that they can replicate at home with the same results. All classes are taught by teachers.

This is the fifth workshop in our Basics Series program. This class moves away from the more traditional shapes, adding a modern twist to the wedding cake with the double extended tiers. This 2 tier shape actually consists of two tiers in the base covered to look like one; the goal of this workshop is for students to master setting up and covering a double tier (Please note the top tier is styrofoam). Students will also be introduced to the beautiful arts of piping and stencilling with royal icing, and learn to create a technically superior cake, one that is beyond the skill level of many established decorators. In addition, students will learn how to make a ruffle peony. Planet Cake’s goal is to teach students skills and designs that they can replicate at home with the same results. All classes are taught by qualified teachers.

The sixth workshop in the Basics Series, you will be designing your own cake! Basics 106 teach students one of the industry’s most popular cake shapes, the Barrel cake. In a big move away from Basics 105, students will design their own cake under the supervision of one of Planet Cake’s senior teachers. During the two day workshop, students will focus on design principles, setting up a cylinder cake with center pole as well as piping, painting or flower/figurine modelling, dependent on student’s design (Please note the top tier is styrofoam).

Basics 107 is the seventh workshop in the Basics series. After completing Basics 101 to 106 it is time for you to employ all the different skills you have learnt and create one of the most unusual and beautiful wedding cakes on the market the square vase which introduces you to assembling cakes with inverted tiers. You will be will be influencing the design, cutting and covering and assembling a tier inverted vase with a 5 inch bottom and 9 inch top. As an advanced student you will also be influencing the design of the cake. You will be using your extended tiers and tiered cake covering and assembly experience. You will be making sugar flowers and decorating your vase by placing flowers, strips covering seams and icing the board. This cake is a great addition to your cake decorating repertoire and a satisfying challenge for advanced decorators.

The newest addition to the basics series allows students to employ each of the skills learned from Basics 101 through to 107, to create the challenging Tapered Sphere and Square Cake. The three day workshop allows students to design the cake through choice of colour scheme and theme. Skills learned can include flower making, piping or painting, dependent on design. Basics 108 also introduces Styrofoam tiers and making sphere pillars.

Basics 109 introduces students to the famous and challenging Madhatter cake. Notorious for being one of the most complex shapes to cut, the ability to execute the Madhatter with precision is a must for any professional cake decorator. Students will learn to set and up and cover a three tier Madhatter cake, properly apply fondant stripes, piping, creating a sugar flower and decorate with cut-outs.

The “Snowman” cake not only teaches you the fundamentals of setting up and covering, but you will learn how to achieve Planet Cake’s famous razor sharp edges, cover seams, ice your board and employ four different cake decorating techniques. Planet Cake’s goal is to teach students skills that they can replicate at home with the same results. All classes are taught by teachers with Trade qualifications and a minimum of 10 years cake decorating experience, all classes will also be assisted by a teaching assistant. You will have a fun introduction into cake decorating and this course would replace Novelty 101 should you wish to progress further with more workshops next year. In this course we will initially cover cake basics on everything from how to prepare the perfect base before you decorate to how to handle rolled fondant icing and the different equipment we use. The course will then progress quickly and students will attempt their own cake as well as gain knowledge and experience in preparing a range of novelty decorating techniques including air-brushing, painting, glazing & making Santa’s legs using figurine skills. More advanced students will be taught helpful techniques and tips to improve their current skill base. This is a ‘hands on’ course therefore class sizes will be kept relatively small, all materials and a lovely lunch is also provided. Basics Foundation week is designed to teach all the basic introductory skills required to embark on a cake decorating career, in a five day intensive workshop. Students will learn to set up and cover the round, square and two tier extended cake, through the completion of Basics 101 to 103 and an abbreviated version of Beginner Sugar Flowers. In addition students will receive a bonus one hour workshop on cake decorating business principles such as pricing. While being fully immersed in a class focused on commercial cake decorating techniques this is regarded as one of the best and most complete beginner cake decorating programs in the world. Smaller student numbers (workshops are limited to a maximum of eight students) combined with the intensive nature of the week, allow students to reinforce learning outcomes from the previous day, improving the likelihood of retaining knowledge while enjoying the benefits of a week focused on the most popular cakes ordered by customers.
